Kasimi / Ferrous Acetate

Kasimi the traditional black dye of India is made from iron scrap which is first fired and then fermented with jaggery or old gur. Kasimi gives a rich black; unlike its synthetic dyeing substitute, ferrous sulphate, it does not weaken yarn or fabric.

Ready-for-dye cotton yarn is washed with non-toxic biodegradable detergent and then mordanted with alum and tannin (myrobalan extract).

The mordanted yarn is then rinsed and treated with an inorganic, non-toxic, leveling agent and then immersed in a hot dye bath containing dye extract (kasimi).

The dyed yarn is rinsed and thereafter washed in hot detergent, rinsed with water and then dried.

As the colors are derived from natural ingredients, it's natural that they fade over time. To preserve the longevity of the colors, avoid placing them under direct sunlight and store in cool place. Hang shirt to avoid discoloration along folds.

Wash fabric by hand or machine wash with a gentle cycle. Use a gentle washing detergent as much as possible. Avoid using bleach. Dry in shade. Do not machine dry.
